RENOVATION OF CATHERIJNESINGEL, UTRECHT

The station area in the centre of Utrecht is being substantially redeveloped. An important part of this redevelopment is the restoration of the Catherijnesingel (formerly a canal), which had been filled in in the 1970s. At the Rijnkade (quayside), the existing underground drainage sluiceway will be dismantled, and a new settling basin will be installed. GEO2 Engineering B.V. has made the geotechnical design for this, including the design of the new adjacent quay wall of the Catherijnesingel.

An important success factor in this project was the influence of the surroundings, due to the fact that the surrounding buildings are all very close to the work being carried out on the project. The design activities were carried out using the finite element programme Plaxis 2D, in which the calculated deformations and extensions had a major influence on implementation.
