GELDERSEKADE, AMSTERDAM
In the heart of Amsterdam overlooking the Nieuwmarkt is the Geldersekade. In collaboration with Beens Groep, GEO2 Engineering B.V. considered the expected deformations resulting from the replacement of the quay for the municipality of Amsterdam and carried out the corresponding tests for the canal houses behind it.
The existing quay was placed in front of the existing quay in the early 20th century with the aim of creating more space on the quay. The remnants of the old quay can still be found under the current cycle path today.
Further cables, pipes and an old cast-iron sewer pipe lie behind the existing quay structure. But the stately and sometimes monumental canal houses with pot-houses also present sufficient geotechnical challenges.
Using the Plaxis software programme, the deformations of the new quay were calculated, as well as the expected deformations at the location of the cables, pipes and adjacent buildings.
