DOKPARK NDSM-SHIPYARD, AMSTERDAM
The City of Amsterdam is transforming the former NDSM shipyard into a modern neighbourhood that is meaningful for the entire city. An important part of this development is the new neighbourhood park ‘Dokpark’. This park will be realised on a filled-in harbour, which requires a sheet piling construction.
GEO2 Engineering B.V. was commissioned to optimise the construction phasing and anchor design of the sheet piling construction. To this end, analyses were carried out in Plaxis 2D to determine the sheet piling and anchor design. This involved looking for an optimal phasing of the backfilling and installation and prestressing of the anchors.
An important consideration in this design was the subsidence of the soil on the anchors. A backfill of approx. 10m is realised on soft soil where the anchors were already installed. This resulted in a significant increase in anchor force. For this, a detailed analysis of the sagging on the anchor versus the top load acting on the anchor was carried out.
The dam wall construction, including anchoring and backfilling, was successfully completed in 2023. This was followed by a period of pre-loading to allow the site to set in a controlled manner. Once this phase is completed, the Dock Park can be constructed.
