RIJNKADE, ARNHEM
De Rijnkade in Arnhem is part of the primary flood defence system and is part in the national High Water Protection Programme (HWBP). The existing quay construction consists of a high quay of retaining walls and a low quay with anchored sheet piling. For the high quay, dike reinforcement is planned within the project.
In a previous projectphase, the Rijn and IJssel Water Board investigated the possible measures to bring the flood defence up to the national water safety standard. This involves replacing or strengthening parts of the flood defence.
In addition, the layout of the low and high quays will be changed at several locations to provide more space for meeting, catering and safe (walking) traffic. For example, near the Nelson Mandela Bridge, the existing retaining walls will be removed and replaced by a green water retaining slope where recreation is possible.
The project is being carried out by Bouwcombinatie Samen consisting of Van der Ven, Ballast Nedam and Hakkers.
GEO2 Engineering B.V. is involved in this project through Hakkers B.V. and has worked on the following parts of the project:
- Realisation sheet pile walls Roermondsplein, where dam walls were installed at a very short distance from the busy road. It was only possible to close off the road for two weekends;
- General design of the retaining walls and anchored sheet pile walls in accordance with the Eurocode and water safety guidelines;
Ensuring safety against high water during the construction phase; - Testing and designing reinforcement measures of existing retaining walls;
- Various executional challenges.
